The days are getting shorter, and the winter weather is quickly settling in. And many of our neighbors in need have no place to go. In years past, Springs Rescue Mission has been able to house up to 60 people during the winter months. The reality? That’s a mere fraction of the number of individuals experiencing homelessness in our city. After months of dreaming, planning and building, our campus expansion project is well underway, and next month we will open the doors to our new year-round shelter. Our new shelter will provide 150 beds year-round, with an additional 32 mats available on the coldest nights. That is triple what we’ve been able to provide in the past. But we couldn’t have done this on our own. You made this happen--your donations, your support, your faith in us.While the practical impact of this project is apparent, our campus expansion is inspiring a deep sense of hope for our neighbors in need.
Kevin Davis was a high-school dropout at 17 when he turned to the drilling business to make ends meet. Two children later, the oil rigs went down, and he was left jobless and hopeless. After years of drinking himself nearly to death, his daughter finally pleaded with him. She needed a dad. She needed him to make a decision.“That’s all that it took right there. Any person in their right mind - if they’ve got a kid that comes up to them and says, ‘Dad, I need you in my life’ -- that’s a wake up call right there,” he says. His daughter’s pleas led him to our New Life Program, and he graduated on July 7th. The next day, he began work with Nunn Construction working on SRM’s campus expansion. “I’ll do what I have to do, but my kids need their dad. I’m not going to let them down. I’m done with that… Thanks to the Mission and God. God put me over here to build this place,” says Kevin. From a participant in our rehabilitation program to an employee helping build and expand our mission, Kevin is exactly why this project matters. The very fact that this project has employed and empowered one of our own is proof of its long-lasting effect. But we aren’t done yet.
Phase two of our expansion is also underway and involves the construction of a resource center for our neighbors in need. This facility will provide showers, laundry machines, computers to help with things like job searches and partner offices for local agencies to help streamline the services we provide to our guests.Once completed, this facility will be a place where our neighbors in need can get all the services they require in one location. It will help us be more comprehensive and strategic in assisting and empowering our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
Community members like you have helped fund much of this expansion, but we are still short of our final goal. That's why we still need you, compassionate community members, to help. Please join us in making Colorado Springs a more caring city.
Without a warm and safe place to sleep, many of our homeless neighbors wouldn’t survive on the streets.
Every dollar you donate will be matched,
doubling the impact you have
on homeless neighbors in your community!
Help us reach our goal by September 30!
