Like many others, George’s life took a dramatic turn during the COVID-19 pandemic. A serious illness—not the coronavirus itself—resulted in unemployment, which in turn led to homelessness.
“During that time, I just kind of gave up,” George said. “I was down to about 110 pounds. It was rough. … I stayed out on the streets for a few days, and that’s when I heard about Springs Rescue Mission.”
At SRM, George finally began to find his footing. However, shortly thereafter, he suffered a stroke that resulted in temporary mobility issues and semi-permanent facial paralysis. For weeks, he lay in a hospital bed, wondering if life would ever be the same — yet grateful to be alive.
“At first I was very concerned,” he said. “One neurologist told me I’d never fully recover, but another said it wasn’t as major. … It took some time, but physically, I’m as good as I’ve ever been.”
George’s physical recovery was remarkable, but it was his inner journey that brought about true transformation in his life. During his time at SRM, George discovered not only “three hots (hot meals) and a cot,” but also a path toward a deeper understanding of himself and his faith.
“Before I came here, I just gave up on everything,” George said.“But I’ve gotten a lot closer to God since then.”
Through faith-based classes and individual Christian counseling, George began addressing life’s challenges with a newfound support system. He has learned valuable lessons about dealing with people more effectively and noted that the classroom environment has helped him improve his communication skills that he had previously lost due to the stroke.
Along with his spiritual growth, George has been focusing on practical skills to re-enter the workforce—hopefully part-time in a role that isn’t too physically demanding. He has taken classes on job interviewing and workplace interactions, as well as basic courses in topics like money management. Additionally, has been volunteering in the dining hall, which he says gives him a sense of pride and purpose while living at SRM. “Being busy is important to me,” George said. “I don’t want to just lay around and watch TV. I’ve learned that the more active I stay, the better I feel — both physically and mentally.”
Looking ahead, George has ambitious plans. His SRM case manager assisted him in enrolling in government benefits, and he hopes to move into his own apartment soon. George is realistic about the challenges before him, but he’s determined to remain positive and continue moving.
“I hope I’ll be in good shape,” he said. “I just want to stay busy and get back on my feet. With the help I’ve received here, I’m confident I’ll make it.”
George’s story is a testament to the power of prayer, community, and determination. When asked what he would tell the donors who make Springs Rescue Mission’s work possible, George was quick to answer:
“This place really makes a big difference. I had no where else to go. No family. No close friends that I wanted to burden. This place has given me a second chance.”
