January was full of activity and positivity at the Mission. We were recognized by the Colorado House of Representatives for the work we do to help homeless neighbors in Colorado Springs; we saw two men graduate from the New Life Program (men's residential addiction recovery); and we continue to see hundreds of people in need seek food, shelter and guidance on our campus. Every day, we see amazing stories of reconciliation, restoration and transformation at the Mission!
Springs Rescue Mission was recognized on the floor of the Colorado House of Representatives Wednesday, Jan. 22, for the work it does to help the hungry, homeless and addicted in Colorado Springs and throughout the Pikes Peak Region. The tribute was proposed by Colorado State Rep. Tim Geitner (R – House District 19) and signed by Colorado House Speaker KC Becker (D – House District 13). READ MORE!
In 2018, Springs Rescue Mission embarked on a journey to create more pathways out of homelessness through new approaches to sheltering. That journey led to the development of a program that breaks sheltering into three core tiers — Entry, Next Step and Advanced — designed to create steps out of homelessness and back to self sufficiency. Friends and family gathered around Michael last month during his graduation from the New Life Program. His fellow NLP residents remarked on his sense of humor — many mentioned his silly sound effects — and provided emotional commentary on his integrity, strong will, work ethic and commitment to his faith."Even as a young boy, Michael had a heart of compassion," said Michael's mother. "I praise the Lord for the restoration of his life."The Bible verse Michael chose for his graduation was Micah 7:8: "Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me."
Stephanie is a hairstylist and began volunteering her services at Springs Rescue Mission in 2016. Now in her fifth year at the Mission, she said it has been a very positive experience.“People are very appreciative,” she said. "You don’t think about how big of a deal a haircut is until you don’t have it. I feel like it boosts people’s confidence and improves their self-image — because it helps you look younger and cleaner. A lot of people are getting ready for interviews; a lot of them are married and want to look good for their spouse. … For people who haven’t taken good care of themselves, having shorter hair makes that a little easier.”
"I couldn't have done this without the Holy Spirit guiding me... You can't do it all on your own."Last month, Michael became the newest graduate of the New Life Program. During his graduation ceremony, his friends talked about his joy, his willingness to help others and his truthfulness. They also called him, "the consummate 'nice guy.'"Michael chose Psalm 118:13-14 as his graduation verses: "I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation."Subscribe to our blog to learn more about Springs Rescue Mission and the people we serve — people who have seen tough times but are committed to breaking the cycles of homelessness, hunger and addiction in their lives.
