One of the best things about the New Life Program is the graduation day. During my first year in the program, I used to cry tears of Joy during every graduation. It’s amazing to see the transformation Christ has done in a person’s life. I am sure that the resident who is graduating is celebrating the fact that he persevered through the one-year long program and successfully completed it. At the same time, he must be anxious about the unknown future that is ahead of him. The graduate must be thinking, “how I am going to make it out there in the world that’s constantly changing?”As we begin this New Year, I am like that graduate wondering about the uncertain days that are ahead of me. We all might have concerns or questions about this year and how it is going to be. I have lost some of my loved ones in 2018. Will 2019 be different than 2018? Am I going to make it? Heraclitus once quipped that “The only thing that is constant is change.” But, there is something else that is constant ― God.In the midst of all the destruction and uncertainty of the future of the nation Judah, prophet Jeremiah was reminded that ‘the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.’ (Lamentations 3:22-23). God is trustworthy, and He doesn’t change. That’s my assurance and foundation as I begin this New Year.As I reflect on that timeless truth, I am reminded of the poem King George VI quoted during his Christmas Day broadcast in 1939:“I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, 'Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.' And he replied, 'Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than light, and safer than a known way.'"Let’s put our hand into the hand of God as we journey through this year. May you have a blessed 2019.
